Is an organizational mid-life crisis coming your way?

We all know someone, and that someone might be you- dissatisfied at varying levels, with the direction their life has taken. Or they seem to be dragging a bad case of persistent, low-level melancholy that they just can’t shake.

Now, there are all sorts of potential reasons for that. Life has dealt them bad cards. Born in the wrong place at the wrong time to the wrong parents. You name it.

But as the saying goes, it is not our problems that define us, but how we deal with them that makes us who we are.

Sometimes though, we aren’t even aware of what is causing the distress.  We have been asleep at the wheel of our life and realize that we are now in a job, in a relationship, in a community that is totally at odds with our values and what we are trying to accomplish in this lifetime.

" It is not our problems that define us, but how we deal with them that makes us who we are."

Now what if we transpose that thought process into your organization?

Does it feel a little off track? Not moving fast enough or more complicated than it needs to be? Does it feel like there is untapped potential just waiting to be unleashed?

Or perhaps, you’re not achieving what you set out to achieve in the first place. That initial spark, that impetus that fuels your excitement to get up every day to go kick some ass and conquer the world is seemingly eluding you.

Perhaps even, certain elements are going well, but you feel your endeavours are all over the place and you are unable to focus your efforts.

If any of this sounds remotely familiar, it is probably time to revisit your mission, vision, aspiration, mantra, you name it, I don’t care what you call it. It’s time to anchor back down into why the organization exists in the first place. Your raison d’être.

In the hustle and bustle of life, it is easy to lose our way.  To run to the latest shiny toy. A perceived shift in the market or the latest marketing trend. What our friends, family or colleagues are urging us to do.

What isn’t as easy, is to stay true to ourselves.  To be unique. To have an opinion. To stand out. To stand for something. That is as true for a person as it is for an organization.

So, what do you and your organization stand for? Is it clear? If so, are you living it? If not, it may be time to take a deeper look.
