We are officially B Corp Certified!

For those of you who have never heard of a B-Corp, it is a certification designation for organizations that:

  • meet a higher standard when it comes to social and environmental impact;
  • legally change their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders; and
  • commit to a higher level of transparency for all stakeholders.

If you’re interested, you can learn more about it here.

B-Corp Certification is well known in the for-profit do-gooder world but not so much by the greater public. So why did we decide to do it?

We have set big intentions for karmadharma

Well, first of all, it is an incredible introspective exercise for any organization.

It forces you to think about why you are in business. What is the impact you are looking to make with your organization? Are you in it to maximize profit at the expense of all else? Or are you looking to create an organization that will simultaneously serve the needs of clients, the team, partners, the community and the planet?

I always knew that I wanted karmadharma to be a force for good in the world. And after a long initial stint in the corporate world, if I was going to build my own shop, it had to align with my life’s work. Somewhere we could do our part to make the world a better place at every possible level.

Why certify?

Now, why on earth would we do this? Well, other than wanting to be a part of a cool club, we at karmadharma have always had big ambitions beyond just being profitable.

Did we need the outside validation? No. Are we doing it for marketing purposes? Maybe a little. We want to be working with other do-gooders all day, every day.

The application process was like running a marathon with a side order of boot camp. It pushed us to the edge, and made us re-examine our processes, procedures, and even our morning coffee choices. We learnt new things, discovered different aspects of governance, ethics & transparency, and explored ways to measure our carbon footprints.

It also forced us to start thinking about how we were going to measure the impact we are looking to make. Apparently, it can’t be all about good intentions. We know where that road leads….

Turns out wanting to do good is just the first step. You also need to measure and deliver on your promises. Who knew, right? 😂

What’s even better is that B Corp Certification is the best accountability buddy we could ask for. Every three years, we get to prove that we’re not just all talk, and with our commitments made public, we’re putting ourselves on the line every single day.

We’ll keep you posted on the progress and impact.

Thank you for joining us on this wild and wonderful adventure.

Let’s do this!
