Finding refuge in the wisdom of uncertainty

Is this the right job for me?

Are they the one?

Am I going to make it through this?

Is this going to work out?

Much like the old adage that the only constant is change, the only certainty is uncertainty.

Life is one long stream of unknowns, yet we continue to cling to the illusion of guarantees.  (Or as my auto corrector put it when I voice recorded this idea: so many unknowns, yet we all want guacamole. 😂 Also true, but that is for a different blog.)

We tell ourselves: If only we knew how things would turn out, we could move forward.

The irony is that our paths are littered with leaps of faith.

When I made the move to walk away from a toxic family environment, was it the right move…no guarantees (FYI – definitely the right move)

When Jody and I married, we were/are betting on it being for life, but…no guarantees.

(For the curious souls, 21 years and still going strong. 👊)

Launching karmadharma after a long corporate career, I was/am praying this is my last gig, but…no guarantees.

I write these blogs hoping they will help someone along in their journey, but…no guarantees

We all have these inflection points in our lives. Decision after decision, big or small. outcomes remain out of our control. Obvious, right?

So, if we know nothing is a sure thing in life, why does our clinging to how things turn out prevent us from doing so many things?

What would our lives look like if we could, as my favourite podcaster Krista Tippett puts it, befriend uncertainty?

Loosen our grip on the thing we could never hold in the first place.

Make peace with the unknown.

Move forward with courage.

Let’s do this!
